This was a Dan stop although Jo also loves looking at mansions. Dan really just likes to see the railroad stuff and the mansion is second. This home was Frederick Vanderbilt’s, grandson of Cornelius, the patriarch of the family. Frederick was one of the few Vanderbilt’s who worked and increased his fortune while others spent all their money. The mansion and grounds were beautiful, and our tour guide was great. There were only 4 of us on the tour so we were able to have good conversations.
After the tour, we walked around the grounds/gardens, then walked along a path behind the mansion that led to a bridge over the tracks to a park where Frederick used to sit and watch the trains. On our way to Sleepy Hollow we made a short stop at the old Hyde Park train station that Franklin Roosevelt used when he was President.
