The road to Durango was quite the adventure. The drive through the mountains was absolutely beautiful and we stopped in Silverton to do recon for our next day’s train ride. This gave me the opportunity to see the Christ of the Mines Shrine that I read about in a book Dan gave me for my birthday, Monuments, Marvels, and Miracles: A Traveler’s Guide to Catholic America. The road to the shrine was really rough gravel, about a mile long up a steep mountain. The sign said it was a half mile to the shrine. We drove right past it to the end of the road and back in to town. We saw it from the middle of town, then drove back up the stupid mountain. It was worth the trip. While in Silverton we stopped by the train store and asked where we should have lunch the following day. He recommended a cafe at the end of the road and said it wouldn’t be as crowded as the restaurants closer to where we exit the train. We finished the day by driving to Durango. The next morning Dan told me to google the Million Dollar Highway…..yep, that was the road we drove from Montrose to Durango! Next stop….train ride!!
